Margarita Merkulova's work (b. 1996) emerges from the fragile space between memory and forgetting, between the body and the absence it sometimes carries. She explores themes of loss, intimacy, and the quiet, persistent presence of personal experience.
Her works with ceramics, drawing, and textiles, using each medium as a way to translate emotion into material. Her objects are born from deeply personal moments, seeking to transform what is private into something that can be shared

The artist works with the theme of the fear of loss — both emotional and material. The piece “Wisdom Teeth” was born from recurring dreams of teeth falling out, a symbol of transformation and anxiety. Each tooth was created through a raku firing process, where fire, smoke, and unpredictability shape the final result.
During its first exhibition, one of the four teeth was stolen. The artist perceived this incident as an extension of the work itself — a piece about loss that literally became one. A missing person–style post about the “lost tooth” was shared on social media and received a great deal of attention, empathy, and support.
Half a year later, the tooth mysteriously returned: it was left in a bag at the gallery door with a note saying, “Sorry. War eine betrunkene Geschichte.” Through this unexpected performative turn, the work gained new meaning — it now embodies not only the traces of fire but also a real story of loss, community, and return.
