Unglasierte, aus recyceltem Ton gebrannte Keramik, Engoben (Slipware)

This unglazed over-decorated ceramic sculpture is the result of a technique I have developed over the past six years, inspired by the richly decorated earthenware of the Japanese Jōmon period (14000-1000 BCE). The ancient clay pots are characterized by their distinctive relief patterns in the form of ropes representing snakes, a universal symbol of rebirth, and other readily available surfaces such as shells and plants.
My work uses recycled clay from my own making, and for the reliefs I use the patterns and negative space of thin plastic containers of everyday items, which stem from a logistic-philosophy of ordering time and space. As the precarious state of materiality in a mechanized, digitalized society is increasingly determined by logistics, I am interested in the transformational processes of both design and materiality in this evolution of mass production. I consider a story of spiritual rebirth and material regeneration through the contemporary lens of logistics, consumption and recycling.
